2007 Alphonse Mellot Les Penitents Pinot Noir
Alphonse Mellot Les Penitents Pinot Noir is a beautiful red wine gem from the Coteaux Charitois appellation in the Loire region of France. Alphonse Mellot traces its history in the famous Loire village of Sancerre to 1513 and the family wine estate is now owned by its 19th generation of winemakers. The family holds 20 hectares of vineyards in Sancerre and 18 hectares in the Coteaux Charitois, about 35km from Sancerre. This second estate is named Les Penitents and is planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The highly regarded French publication La Revue du Vin de France calls Alphonse Mellot's "the most sumptuous Pinot Noirs produced in France outside Burgundy" and awarded the winery 2 Stars in 2009. Stephen Tanzer rated this wine 89 points. Alphonse Mellot practices biodynamic and organic winemaking.
Alphonse Mellot Les Penitents Pinot Noir is deep ruby red in color, medium-full in body, soft and velvety in texture with silky tannins. Focused, graceful and well balanced, it offers a beautiful nose and palate of raspberries, cherries, vanilla, spice and mineral notes. The wine was aged on fine lees for 8-10 months in French oak barrels, 50-60% new. Its lengthy finish shows off the depth, elegance and earthy minerality characteristic of a great Burgundy.
Enjoy Alphonse Mellot Les Penitents Pinot Noir over the next 6-8 years with roast pork, grilled salmon, grilled duck magret with Chanterelles, rich vegetable dishes, and aged cheeses.
