Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a beautiful example of this complex red blend from the Rhone. Named for the village just north of Avignon, Chateauneuf-du-Pape (new castle of the Pope) is the place where Pope John XXII first built a summer residence and planted vineyards back in the 14th century. Philippe Bravay is extremely dedicated to preserving the unique traditions and special characteristics that Châteauneuf brings to the world. Domaine de Ferrand is considerably small with only 7.5 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards spread over 6 parcels in 4 lieux dits, half of which are 45-year-old vines and half are 95- to 110-year-old vines. He uses organic growing techniques, strictly limits yields, and vinifies traditionally in tank. Harvested by hand, selection on the sorting table. No acidification, no sulfites. Sustainable.
“The full-bodied 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a terrific effort from Domaine de Ferrand. Nearly 90% Grenache, with the balance a blend of other permitted varieties, it's concentrated and rich, with hints of allspice, anise and pepper adding nuance to the layers of ripe cherry and apricot fruit. Complex and velvety, this has it all.”—Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 94 points!
