Rhone, France
Petit Chapeau Cotes du Rhone is a gorgeous red wine gem from a fine producer in Cairanne in the southern Rhone region of France. No ratings yet on this new 2015, but the 2009 vintage was judged Best Value among 2009 Cotes du Rhone wines tasted by the New York Times panel on Feb 16, 2011. We always have trouble keeping this wine in stock!
The grapes for Petit Chapeau are mostly old-vines Grenache, hand-harvested with low yields to ensure remarkable depth of flavor. The southern Rhone features the Grenache varietal and includes the well-known appellations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras along with Cotes du Rhone. The region has enjoyed a stunning run of superb vintages over the past 18 years dating back to 1998, with the single aberration of 2002 (severe flooding.) Every vintage except 2002, 2008, and 2013 was rated 90 points or higher by Wine Spectator! Petit Chapeau attests to the depth and quality of the 2015 vintage. This Daniel Johnnes Selection is a true red wine gem!
Petit Chapeau Cotes du Rhone is deep ruby red in color with an intense nose of roasted red fruit, cassis, dried herbs, smoke and spice. Medium-full in body with mild tannins, it is concentrated and rich on the palate and well balanced to enjoy over the next 5-6 years. Long and lingering on the finish.
Enjoy Petit Chapeau Cotes du Rhone as an ideal accompaniment to lamb chops, skirt steak, burgers and grilled vegetables.
