Burgundy, France
Thenard Givry 1er Cru Cellier aux Moines is a beautiful red Burgundy from an excellent vintage and a great value for a premier cru. Domaine Baron Thenard, a highly regarded estate in France, has been bottling and selling wine under their own label for over a century, but it was never exported to the United States because of a contract with Remoissenet. Even with excellent holdings throughout Burgundy, the heart of the domaine has remained in Givry (19 miles south of Beaune) and the three Premier Cru’s are benchmarks for the appellation. The wines are made in a traditional style and age well. The Givry 1er Cru are made in a traditional method, fermented in wood tonneau barrels for 2 weeks, punched-down by foot twice a day, aged in barrel for 12-18 months (5% new oak on the 1er Crus), and only very lightly filtered if necessary. The Cellier aux Moines vineyards were so named in 1258 by the Cistercian Monks of the Abbey of Ferte. Thenard has 4.5 hectares with a southern exposure, located in the middle of the slope. The wine comes from a single plot grown in a marl soil and the average vine age is 35 years old.
Thenard Givry 1er Cru Cellier aux Moines is deep garnet red in color, medium-full in body, soft and velvety with silky tannins. It offers a beautiful nose and palate of black cherries, raspberries and spice. The wine’s elegant finish shows off the depth, length and earthy minerality reserved for great Burgundy.
Enjoy Thenard Givry 1er Cru Cellier aux Moines over the next 6-7 years with roast pork, grilled salmon, pasta, rich vegetable dishes, and aged cheeses.
