Republic of Georgian Wines

Republic of Georgian Wines
The Republic of Georgia has a long history of winemaking. In fact, many people believe that the word "wine" is of Georgian origin. Ancient wine vessels dating back to 5000 B.C. offer evidence to support this theory.

Georgia's moderate climate and moist air, influenced by the Black Sea, provide the best conditions for viticulture. This small country is home to over 500 varieties of wine, which have been enjoyed for centuries by Georgians, Russians and many Europeans. More recently, Georgian wines are being discovered by American wine lovers.

Georgian wines ranked 25th in the world in production according to FAO statistics for 2010, with a total production of 97K metric tonnes.

"The history of Georgia, its culture and the rule of life are embodied in Georgian wine. It is a mystery of hospitality, friendship and longevity. Each toast at Georgian fests starts with the word 'gaumarjos,' (long live!), which means long life, health and walk in victory."
